The Scale of Things We Lose (2022-24)
Halldór Laxness wrote about the otherworldly Icelandic landscape: "Where the glacier meets the sky, the land ceases to be earthly, and the Earth becomes one with heavens; no sorrows live there anymore". In this project I explored feelings accompanying a pilgrimage to Sólheimajökull, a beautiful outlet glacier that is part of Mýrdalsjökull, and a contrast between strong, muted presence of vanishing glacier and dimensions and movements of its human visitors. Iceland's glaciers are melting at the high speed rate, and scientists predict that within 150 years there will be no glaciers left. Small in physical size, human beings have huge egos that caused damage on an unprecedented scale. It is very unlikely that the Earth may become one with heavens without glaciers.
